If you're looking for bowling in Baltimore and specifically gay bowling in Baltimore, you've come to the right place! What can be more fun than getting together with other gay bowlers, making new friends, having a beer or two, talking a bit of trash, and just plain getting Out and About?
So here's the scoop. Originally founded in 1991 as part of the Baltimore Sports Association, Out and About Bowling was a social group founded to offer a place for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) people interested in sports and meeting people outside of the “bar scene”.
The first year the league bowled at Brunswick Normandy Lanes. After an organization change, the league broke off from the association to form its own entity. The league, now known as the “Out and About Bowling League”, moved to Brunswick Perry Hall Lanes and bowled on Monday night.
Due to popular demand of the Monday night league, a second league was formed in 2000, a Sunday afternoon league that offered the same opportunities. In the summer of 2002, a summer league was added that bowled Monday nights. A fourth league was added in the fall of 2009 which now bowls on Thursday nights at AMF Ritchie Lanes in Glen Burnie.
All four leagues remain vibrant, strong, and true to the original intent…a FUN place to bowl and meet new friends! You don't have to be a good bowler to bowl with us. We have a wide variety of skill levels and welcome bowlers of all abilities. We use a handicap system that levels the playing field. All you need to have is the willingness to have fun and make new friends! And no, you don't have to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered to join. We love everyone, even straight people!
Each year, league members elect two charities that serve the GLBT community as recipients of the leagues’ charity donations. Throughout the season, the leagues hold fund raisers such as 50/50s, Strike Ball Pots, Pull Tabs and Brackets. Half of the money collected is donated to these charities. Charities such as the Chase Brexton Clinic, Aids Action Baltimore, H.E.R.O., Susan G. Komen, Johns Hopkins Pediatrics Aids Unit, Meals on Wheels, and many others have been recipients of the leagues’ donations. Over the years, Out and About Bowling has donated nearly $73,000 to these very deserving charities.
So what are you waiting for? Get off that couch! It's time to get Out and About!
